Things to do in the local area…

Based in the heart of the Herefordshire country side, just off the a49 the Pilgrim makes for the perfect base to explore the local area!

Visit Symonds Yat

Symonds Yat is one of the most iconic and beautiful locations in the Dean Wye. There are three distinct parts: Symonds Yat Rock, a viewpoint with incredible views over the River Wye; and the villages of Symonds Yat East and Symonds Yat West on either side of the river.

A birdwatching paradise – Symonds Yat Rock is one of the UK’s best spots for peregrine falcons. With patience, you might also spot goshawks, sparrowhawks, buzzards, migrating ospreys, tawny owls, barn owls, ravens and kestrels. Bring your binoculars!

Choose your adventure with waymarked walking trails leading down to the River Wye and across Biblins Bridge, or explore the forest.

Visit Laskett gardens

Just 1.7 miles away from the Pilgrim, Laskett Gardens are one of Britain’s great autobiographical gardens. Over almost four decades the historian, Sir Roy Strong, and his late wife, the designer Dr Julia Trevelyan Oman, transformed a four-acre field into a series of stunning garden rooms, vistas, ascents and descents. These include a rose garden, pleached lime avenue, orchard, Colonnade Court, knot garden, fountains, statuary and parterres as well as a spectacular array of topiary and rich herbaceous and prairie style borders & the stunning new Belvedere – a tower from which to view the gardens on high.

Open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 April to 30 October 2025. Please book a morning or afternoon slot (10.30 am or 2.30 pm) in advance online and pay at the garden on arrival.
